Explosive Science

Help me give my students chemicals like hydrochloric acid, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium iodide to use for various chemistry experiments, as well as shrinky dinks for some thermal energy experiments.

My Project

Chemistry is my favorite topic to teach! My students love all of the labs and demos for this unit. I've never met a middle school student who doesn't love experiments where we light things on fire or blow things up. I've requested materials that we can use to do some demonstrations and experiments, such as hydrochloric acid, sodium iodide, and hydrogen peroxide. We will make elephant toothpaste with the hydrogen peroxide sodium iodide. This is a fun lab that shows chemical reactions, resulting in an explosion of soap bubbles.

We will use the zinc and hydrochloric acid to blow up a balloon as we talk about chemical changes.

The balloon will fill with hydrogen gas from the chemical reaction. We don't have the money in our budget to buy these supplies, but I believe these items will contribute greatly to the experience of my middle school students. These explosive experiments excite my students and inspire them to learn more about science.

Shrinky dinks will be used for thermal energy experiments, as well as to demonstrate understanding of some science concepts. Students can make creative, colorful, shrinky dinks of atoms, molecules, cells, and element blocks. Most of my students have never made them before, and love watching them shrink.
