My Students
My humanities students have developed a love for reading, thanks in large part to classroom library donations made by generous sponsors. Now, my goal is to help them grow as readers by guiding them through the reading of a complex, engaging book about world history.
Many of my rural students don't see how high school has any relevance to the careers they have planned.
They believe that they have their lives figured out, and they don't see how grasping the complex interplay of civilizations and cultures has anything to do with life in Smalltown, USA.
My Project
That's where A History of the World in Six Glasses comes in. As I read this book with my students, I expect to witness two incredible transformations.
First, when my students walk into my room smelling coffee, only to find that today we are reading about where coffee comes from and how it has played a dramatic role in shaping world history, they will begin to see that learning is fun, even thrilling. The world outside of our small town's radius will suddenly become a bit more imaginable and relevant to their daily lives.
At the same time, my students will make the crucial transition from being readers who stay in their comfort zones to readers unafraid to venture out of them. Prior to reading this book, so many new vocabulary words and unfamiliar historical references will daunt them. But, as we are reading it and discussing it and rejoicing in it, my students will begin to see that difficult does not have to mean impossible or unenjoyable.
By donating this class set of books, you will create possibilities for kids that right now are unimaginable to them.
You will increase their college aptitude test scores, improve their success in other classes, and enable them to go against the disturbing rates of high school and college dropouts that are hampering the upcoming generation. You'll be creating better readers, writers, thinkers, and people -- few investments offer higher potential!
