My Students
I have 7 students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills, as well as communication and social skills.
We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.
We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, and group time to work on academic skills and writing. Students have storytime to work on comprehension, math, science, and art where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and follow picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social, and communication skills.
My Project
Most of my students are working on pre-writing and fine motor skills to strengthen the muscles in their hands to be able to grasp a writing utensil and start to write. Right now I have 3 students in my classroom in person and several more joining next quarter. Each student has individual supplies and activities to stay safe. They can all benefit from more practice with fine motor skills on a daily basis.
My students are working hard and making progress and the next area I want to target is strengthening fine motor skills so we can start to work on pre-writing skills.
The moose, fish, and caterpillar activities are designed to target fine motor skills since the kids have to put objects on, push them in, or put them together. They also have to take the objects apart. The magnetic pre-writing skills activity works on grasping and following a bead as if they are writing to work on strengthening grasp and pencil control. The rainbow scratch paper will help to increase engagement with writing as it is fun to see the paper turn color. The latch and busy boards will help target zipping, buttoning, fastening, and snapping skills which are all necessary life skills.
These activities will help my students have individual activities to work on throughout the day to build the core muscles they need to perform a variety of fine motor tasks. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress they make as they continue to strengthen their muscles and move closer to grasping a pencil and learning to write.
