Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Located in one of Chicago's South Side neighborhoods, our school is inviting, diverse and community driven. We are known for our strong, culturally diverse student body that prioritizes community building. We are proud to know that they represent our school and the community's future.
My students are a strong group of excited innovators that prioritize creating a kind, supportive and loving environment.
In our art class, students are constantly going above and beyond in using creativity to support their values and ideas. They are paving the way for creating the world they want to live in.
My Project
Our students are a strong group of diverse and unique individuals that make up an amazing community. Within our small school community, there is one classroom per grade level. Our students are able to form strong bonds and cultures within their classroom as they are placed with the same peers from grade kindergarten through eighth grade. In an effort to celebrate and strengthen our community, we were inspired to explore who we are as individuals and as a student body.
We are proposing to create a community class quilt/flag using cyanotype printing fabric.
Students will use the cyanotype fabric by transferring the image of artifacts from home that represent each student's identity to create a classroom culture and identity quilted artifact. Historically, flags and quilts have been used as markers within the community to celebrate ideas, individuals and communities. Our hope is to do the same. The culminating project will be presented in an exhibition at a local gallery.
