Exploring Today's News to Achieve Perspective & Tolerance

My students need a class set of Scholastic Jr. Scholastic Magazines.

My Students

The 8th grade students that enter my classroom are diverse in their cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds. While they have vastly different lives outside of school, the thing they all have in common is that they are a part of our national, local, and school-wide communities.

My students, like most middle-schoolers, have a number of things in their outside lives that loom over them while they are on campus.

Part of my job is to provide curricula that is both universally-accessible and universally-relatable. Doing this enables them to be fully present, actively engaged, and achieve high levels.

My Project

Everywhere they turn, today's students are being bombarded with all sorts of information. I use the time spent in my room to encourage them to avoid bias, consider others' perspectives, and be altogether savvy in their consumption of knowledge. This resource, Junior Scholastic Magazine, greatly adds to this task.

The articles focus on current events, as well as historical events, at a level of comprehension that is geared towards middle school students.

The topics included in this publication often lead to valuable conversations with their peers and the whole class - which allows us to talk about today's world and the need for well-educated, active, and above all else, TOLERANT citizens!
