Exploring the World Through Books: Our Journey

Help me give my students with relatable and interesting books with characters that represent and resemble them.

My Project

The majority of our students struggle with reading and writing. We have limited books where students can make connections with real-life experiences. Most students do not have access to books at home. Additionally, my students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds that are underrepresented in books. As a teacher, I am responsible for encouraging my students to embrace their cultures and ways of life. Exploring books that represent and resemble them is a great way to do that! The purpose of this book collection is to spark my students' interest and build their knowledge of realistic and relatable content. My small classroom size will allow me to implement literature circles and group activities using the book collection. The books I have requested explore several themes, such as cultural diversity, growing up, the importance of work, unconditional love, acceptance, discrimination, and change.

It is essential for me to teach my students how to read effectively by using a rich text that is complex and rich in content.

With these books, my students will be engaged in deep discussions and given writing opportunities centered around rich, complex text. Using these books to explore cultural diversity will open the door to all possibilities, increase my students’ engagement, and increase their learning. My students have been motivated to learn through reading. These books will deepen my students' understanding and allow my students to explore how words, details, structure, and organization of texts affect the meaning of the text and the reader's perspective.
