Exploring the World of Nonfiction in Science

My students need nonfiction science books to support learning in class.

My Students

I work with a wide variety of students at a rural school in Indiana. It is a large farming community that loves sports. The students are energetic and love the outdoors, technology, and popular culture.

My students love to work on assignments that allow them to be creative.

If they can put their own touch on it they get very involved. I want to challenge my students to love Science and to really learn it in my classroom in a variety of ways.

My Project

My project is adding the use of nonfiction texts to support current instruction and learning in the classroom. I believe this could benefit the student's reading levels and increase their interest in reading both fiction and nonfiction and their interest and understanding in Science. Students currently don't read much nonfiction about science and this will change that.

A nonfiction book can add so much more depth to a topic than is in the textbook.

I plan on adding different projects to the curriculum where the students can use the books to research and create book trailers, commercials, videos, bibliographies, create additional topics for group discussion, timelines, and much more.
