Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students come from one of the most economically distressed parts of our city. Every day, they overcome challenges in their community, families and their individual lives. These challenges include single parent (or even "zero" parent) homes, violence, poverty and discrimination.
Despite the fact they face many obstacles, they are determined to get the education that will lift them out of poverty and set them on the path to new horizons.
They need to have a rich background of literacy and critical thinking to successfully complete their journey.
My Project
As is true of many schools in my district, the school where I teach has a growing Hispanic student body. They add a new element to what was already a "minority-majority" population. My students would all benefit from gaining insight into Hispanic culture.
I have chosen a novel, "Under the Feet of Jesus" by Helena Maria Viramontes that makes an often invisible group of our nation more visible: migrant farm workers, a group often overlooked yet vital to all our lives.
These men and women work long hours in often grueling conditions for little pay. Without them, our tables would be quite bare. Yet they are often disparaged and condemned for their willingness to do what few of us want to do-harvest farm crops.
Help me bring these workers' lives to light for my students so that they may gain empathy for their lives.
