My Project
My students are absolutely fascinated by the Titanic. This fascination with the Titanic has become a natural curiosity for them, and I want to harness that interest to fuel their learning in a way that feels engaging and meaningful. By diving deep into the history, the people aboard, and the mysteries surrounding the Titanic, we can build a unit that feels personal to them while expanding their knowledge in many directions.
Next year, I’d love to design a unit where we immerse ourselves in all things Titanic.
From reading non-fiction books to exploring historical accounts, newspaper articles, and even survivor stories, we can connect the subject matter to their current literacy skills. By engaging with the various forms of media related to the Titanic—whether it’s through reading or interactive research—I hope to strengthen their reading comprehension, vocabulary, and analytical thinking. The deep dive will encourage students to think critically about historical events, enhance their ability to read for information, and work on summarizing key details. It's a perfect opportunity to challenge their reading skills, all while exploring a subject they’re already passionate about.
Moreover, exploring the Titanic will likely spark new interests in my students, as they connect the historical event to modern topics such as engineering, disaster response, and even the development of maritime technology. For some, this could lead to a lifelong interest in history, science, or even writing. For others, the unit will serve as a gateway to a broader understanding of literature and non-fiction storytelling. By tapping into their existing enthusiasm, I’m confident that this project will not only improve their literacy skills but also ignite a curiosity for learning that will stay with them well beyond the classroom.
