Help me give my students a telescope for observing the Moon, planets, and star systems.

My Project
Students at BHSEC Manhattan earn both a high school diploma and an associate degree in four years. Our diverse student body goes through a competitive application process and takes rigorous classes throughout their time at BHSEC. The Astronomy course is one of our college credit-bearing science electives.
My students possess the curiosity, tenacity, and thoughtfulness innate to burgeoning scientists who appreciate learning about their place in the cosmos.
They are committed to scholarship and exhibit the grit required by an early college.
Throughout the course, students learn about our location among the cosmos, the history of astronomy, our solar system, the life cycle of stars, galaxies, dark matter, black holes, and cosmology. Having a dedicated telescope would enable a practical stargazing component where students not only learn how to use telescopes but also employ strategies for planning and making night sky observations. A hands-on approach makes the course more exciting, relevant, and provides the opportunity to improve their science literacy skills while expanding the variety and quality of experiences during their formative years.
Seeing celestial objects through a telescope for the first time is an indelible moment and can spark lifelong learning in STEM.
Students will plan night sky observations using Stellarium planetarium software, learn to assemble and operate the telescope, and capture images of bright sky objects easily seen from NYC like the Moon, planets, and star systems. My goal for this aspect of the course is to endow students with the skills to conduct observations independently, which may ultimately lead to a career in science or a fulfilling, lifelong hobby.
