Exploring the Life Cycle of Chickens in First Grade
My students need an incubator to hatch eggs during our animal life cycle unit. This incubator will also allow them to see the development of the embryo inside the egg.
I teach first grade at a Science Technology Engineering and Math School. My students will soon be studying life cycles of animals, and most have never seen eggs hatch. I would like them to have this opportunity.
My first graders are curious and excited about the world around them.
Their academic skills are growing by leaps and bounds.
Our class had the opportunity to attend an agricultural expo at a local high school and loved seeing and touching the chickens. My class would like to study the life cycle of chickens during our animal life cycle unit.
My Project
This mini digital incubator will automatically turn the eggs and keep the eggs at the correct temperature. It will also allow my students to see the development of the embryo inside the egg without disturbing the eggs. My students will have the opportunity to observe the development of the eggs, read a story in our reading textbook about the life cycle of chickens, and journal about the development of the eggs in their STEM notebooks. After the eggs have hatched, the chicks will be given to a loving home in the country.
An incubator will make the life cycle unit a hands-on, engaging experience students will remember for years to come.
The incubator will also be able to be reused year after year bringing joy to many future first graders.
