My Students
Remember how daunting the SATs were? I'm hoping to make the SATs (and PSATs) more approachable for my students as they get ready for college. By introducing literature to my class, their scientific knowledge will deepen, as will their comfort with new vocabulary terms.
Attending a brand new school in Brooklyn, NY has been an eye opening experience for students and teachers.
After working hard to create a community that welcomes many different populations (special education, general education, and autistic students) my students look for the smaller pleasures in life, such as reading. Last year, I began instituting weekly reading time, so my students would become more literate. We read everything from Dr. Seuss, to Roald Dahl short stories, and William Faulkner very short stories. This year we are all looking forward to taking on more substantial works, beginning with these books!
My Project
My students will take part in a reading program over a 4 year trajectory. Last year, we worked on instituting routines of reading during down time, and at home. After reading several Dr. Seuss stories and extracting the meaning of each story, we tried our hand at Roald Dahl short stories. Classics such as "A Lamb to the Slaughter" inspired my students to read more. We finished the year on an extra creepy note with William Faulkner's "A Rose For Emily" which involved a lot of reading-between-the-lines and suspense.
This year, I'm looking to bring in many works that my students can relate to. Many of my students saw "I Am Legend" in theaters, and were shocked to learn that it was a book first. As 9th and 10th grade biochemistry students they are constantly tackling subjects that are hard to relate to. Through reading this book, we will be able to discuss the theory of evolution in a comfortable setting, as they will be able to use the book as a reference point.
Donating to this project would mean that my students would each have their own copy of the book, instead of photo copies.
This would allow students to read in their leisure time, and in class time, which would deepen their understanding of the text greatly. I have promised my students that we will read "I Am Legend" before they graduate, and they ask me weekly when we will be able to read such an interesting book.
