Exploring Realistic Fiction With Gary Paulson’s “Hatchet”
Help me give my students a class set of the novel “Hatchet” by Gary Paulson so they can experience the joy of adventure and make connections to a character their age who inspires independence and perseverance.
My students are struggling readers and have a hard time finding books they are interested in. Hatchet is a classic tale of survival that features a kid their age overcoming challenges. We are requesting a set of 30 “Hatchet” books for my students to use during our novel study. I have also requested two teacher guides that give ideas for activities and lessons related to the novel. I plan to use them to help guide my instruction for our Hatchet Unit.
The goal for this project is to inspire struggling readers and help them develop skills to analyze texts so students can meet expected grade level ELA standards.
I have been reading Gary Paulson’s “Hatchet” with my kids for the past 2 years and we would like to have a class set so each student can follow along or read at their own pace. I read it with my 6th grade class last year, and they loved it. I was overwhelmed with how much they connected to the character of Brian so I started the novel with my 8th graders this year. So far, they love it too! I do not have a class set of the novel, and I am currently reading the book aloud to my students asking them to visualize the scenes and action. My 7th graders who enjoyed Hatchet last year are currently reading “Brian’s Winter” , the next book in the collection. Our school has a set of 10 copies of Brian’s Winter, but only one copy of Hatchet. Please help us make this novel study a success and deepen my students knowledge of character development, setting, and plot by giving each student a copy of the novel to read during class or at home.
