Every day when the bell rings at 7:50 am, I have the distinct privilege of greeting my 22 first graders. Every day, these students from all different backgrounds trickle into my room with smiles on their faces and a go get 'em attitude. They come in and put their full trust in us! They trust that we're going to provide them with all the tools they'll need to learn how to read and become successful first graders ready for the next year.
My students, though different in so many ways, all have that same drive to succeed, that same innocent curiosity.
We are a rural school district with a huge degree of differing socioeconomic backgrounds. And though we are small, our community is overflowing with enormous amounts of school spirit and pride.
My Project
In a classroom with 22 eager students, we share 4 iPads, and though it teaches us patience, I cringe at the missed opportunities we have because our technology is so limited within the classroom. We have access to wonderful computer programs, but I can only allow a handful of students to use it!
I would love to open a new world of learning for these kiddos through some added technology like Chromebooks!
Not only will we be able to quickly research the amazing places and topics that we read about in our new reading series, but we can also better utilize our programs that allow us to practice our math facts, reading skills, and even practice our coding and typing skills!
Three new Chromebooks would allow us to open up a new learning station. Centers and Station work has become a big part of our school culture here and this will add independence and engagement to our classroom. It will also allow students who don't have access to technology like this at home, the opportunity to learn how to use it responsibly here at school!
