Exploring Our World Using Art and Sensory Tools

My students need sensory and art items (sponge painting tools, glue, clothespins, chewy pencil toppers) to explore the world around them.

My Students

I have 7 students in a K/1 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills as well as communication and social skills.

We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.

We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, group time to work on academic skills and writing, story time to work on comprehension, math, science and art time where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and following picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social and communication skills.

My Project

My students love having a variety of activities to complete throughout the school day. They especially love art time. We complete art projects in our classroom 3 days a week and it's one of their favorite times of the day. We use construction paper and follow picture directions to complete each step of the project. We use purple glue because the students can see where to glue each part of the project they are making. We use a lot of construction paper and glue to complete these projects!

My students love learning through art projects!

They also love to paint. We don't have many items to paint with so they will love having a variety of tools they can use to complete more art projects with paint. Many children with autism have sensory needs and some of my students like when the paint touches their hands and others do not. Most still want their hands washed as soon as possible though! With a variety of sponge painting tools and other fun paint tools students will be able to complete more of a variety of art projects and meet some of their sensory needs while doing so.

My students need breaks throughout the day after completing tasks and activities. They are able to work for certain objects that they can have for a couple minutes when they are finished working. Most of my students enjoy sensory items and we are always in need of a variety of different sensory toys as each student enjoys different things, plus some of our toys get eaten or destroyed! Having a variety of sensory items for students to enjoy will help them to meet their sensory needs by calming down and relaxing their bodies. They are more focused and can complete more activities after breaks!
