it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have amazing students who inspire me each day to become a better teacher. These same children are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. They live in a low-income/high-poverty school district. They leave the harsh reality of their life at the door. These children are our future, and despite the many challenges they face, they enter the classroom full of smiles, dreams, and a strong desire to learn. I want to continue to promote and foster a love for reading and encourage lifelong learners.
Although my students' challenges have prevented them from getting ahead early in life and may not have provided them with the life experiences many of us take for granted, you would never know it.
I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. I am hopeful to inspire them to continue following their dreams and their journey as lifetime learners!
Unfortunately, we do not have a school library so the only access my students have to literature is from our classroom library. Over the past 24 years, I have created our classroom library, a place that my students really enjoy, a place where I read on the carpet to them and they read independently! Our library is in need of books that reflect different cultures and family experiences that will give all children a window into the diverse world in which we live. With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of diverse books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading.
