There's a classroom bursting with energy, where many cultures intermingle and interact, and students work cooperatively to meet the rigorous challenges put forth by their teacher. That's where I get to work every day!
Reading a book with my class this year is a new experience in so many ways.
The multicultural background present in the room provides such a different perspective on text that my thoughts are constantly challenged. As students from different ethnic, linguistic, and socio-economic backgrounds relate (or don't relate) to the text, we exchange opinions and question one another.
When I read from Sadako and the Thousand Cranes today, a child of Vietnamese heritage immediately related to some of the cultural traditions and descriptions in the text. Others wondered and questioned because they hadn't been exposed. This multicultural exchange is commonplace in our room, and these books will allow us to explore American history and piece it together with the cultural groups represented through the characters in these historical fiction novels. The books chosen span history to be covered in our Social Studies curriculum and will provide the springboard for research and projects.
My Project
The books requested in this project will provide access to text that will introduce students to multicultural perspectives with grade level texts. Groups of six students will sit knee to knee working on truly understanding not just the text, but also the others' view on the text, magic happens.
This is where America blends and becomes truly a melting pot: in the places where children are proud to be themselves AND excited to learn about others.
By donating to this project, you are providing topics for discussion with this widely diverse group of curious fifth graders who will become the leaders of our nation one day.
