it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Hello! My name is Paola and I'm a first year dual language 2nd grade teacher. I'm asking for these disposable cameras to be donated to my class. One of my goals as an educator is for my students to be immersed in their community and to get to really know where they learn and what makes our community so special. I'm doing a small unit on community and what makes a community like Echo Park so unique. Part of my project is to take a community walk with the students around the neighborhood so they can see what makes Echo Park. I want them to have disposable cameras as we walk so they can take pictures of anything they believe is important to them and to the community. They can take pictures of the different signs, buildings, businesses, the park, the people, etc. When we finish with our community walk, I plan on having them choose 1-2 pictures and doing a small writing piece on why they chose these and why it helps people see how our community is an important part of our city. I plan to talk about gentrification in Echo Park as well and display all our pictures and writing pieces outside of our class so the school, families and everyone can see the wonderful work they're doing. My students are bright and curious. They love to learn and are always excited to learn things outside of the curriculum. My students are bilingual learners and are constantly helping each other and welcoming each other into our spaces. I want them to be critical thinkers about our world, compassionate and driven to learn and make change.
