My students need a set of books for exposure to nonfiction text and our library currently has very little to offer second grade making it impossible to meet common core requirements.
The new adoption of common core recommends that our students read 65% nonfiction text; however, our library is not stocked to accommodate this. It is October and I have already went through half the available books for my grade level. I want to provide them a variety of topics of the real world.
My students are wonderful.
They are facing tough standards this year; especially with all the new common core adoptions. I am doing my best to implement higher order thinking in my classroom to prepare them for future studies, but we currently lack reading materials to foster this process. I also notice that my students are like thirsty little puppies when they are exposed to books about real things. They can't seem to get enough and that is exciting until you can't provide. We are a title one school and I currently have 23 students in my second grade classroom. Twelve of them arrived not having basic reading skills. I've already seen a jump in reading fluency and I am positive that I can make my students excel if I have the correct materials for them to use. Books are a way to interest them while exposing them to elements that many of our high poverty children will never experience like what the ocean is like, or what an airport does. Help us walk around and through the world
My Project
I would like to purchase a variety of biographies so that our students can begin to learn about some of our great leaders. I would like to purchase a variety of career oriented books so that students can begin to understand all the different things that people in the world do when they grow up. I would like to purchase books about geographical locations, plants, and animals. basically I want to allow them the opportunity to wander through any environment.
I want to be able to pull groups of books together like biographies, animals, plants, etc. to use for writing reports and creating expository projects. I would like to use related topic books to form literature circles and teach my students to link information such as animals and environments or geographical locations and careers. I would like to use the books to teach my students how to discuss, wonder, and research what they read about so that they are constantly reaching in their learning.
We can put a lot of things in a child's hand, but I do not believe that many are as valuable as a book; a tool for life.
I love watching my students grow in their reading and the day that they realize they can read is simply priceless. Kids like nonfiction. They are curious and always want to know why. Please choose our project so that my students can find the why to their millions of questions and grow up to share those why questions and answers with their children. Help us learn the world
