Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We are starting our unit on plant parts and their life cycle, and I would like to expand that lesson to include how they can grow their own food inside our classroom and at home. I will be demonstrating multiple methods of fruit and vegetable plant growth in our classroom, including hydroponics, aquaponics, and traditional soil planting, so that my students can have a deep understanding of the parts of plants and their life cycle. This will also allow them to explore first-hand different ways that they can grow their own food at home.

Many of my students come from very low-income families and struggle with food insecurity.

I deeply believe in improving my students' lives by not only teaching them the curriculum, but also life skills. With these supplies, my students will be able to grow their very own fruit and vegetable plants in our classroom and then take them home to continue growing them in their own homes. This will not only provide my students with the knowledge of the plant parts and life cycle but also give them hands-on understanding of how to grow plants using multiple methods and provide them with a source of food going forward. The saying goes, "give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." I am hopeful that teaching my students how to grow their own food indoors, in a small space, will allow them food security for their lifetime.

Not only will I be showing my own 38 students these methods, but I will also be inviting other classes in our school to come tour our indoor farm and learn about these methods of food production.
