My Students
Deep understanding comes from exploration. To truly cement early math concepts my students need to explore them in various ways both independently and with their peers.
My kindergarteners are wonderfully diverse in every way -- linguistically, socioeconomically, and ethnically.
They are also diverse in their skill levels. While some children don't know any numbers others can add. Having an ample amount of materials for independent and small group learning gives me opportunity to push all children to succeed at a high level starting where they are now. These centers are the tools that are currently lacking in my math curriculum. At our Title 1 school there are many needs and thus less money for this type of materials that are essential to a good program, but expensive.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of math games and learning center materials. These materials will target math strands such as patterns, counting, money, and addition. I envision a classroom where all of my kindergarteners are actively engaged in learning new skills and practicing ones they have recently acquired, while I have opportunity to work with each of them and push them one step further toward enjoying and being confident in math.
The math skills built in kindergarten are essential to those needed in coming years.
I want to give my students a strong foundation that will help them feel that they can do anything!
