My Students

As a child I loved to read. As an adult, I love to surround my students with great literature to foster and encourage a love of reading. I am fortunate. My class this year is full of enthusiastic book lovers!

These kids love a good story, a rich character, a surprise ending, and an unusual character.

They love to get lost in an interesting story that let's them visit new places. They love to tell me about the words that they read that helped them create an exciting mind movie, and they try to spot the literary devices used so they can improve their own writing.

My Project

I love reading and music. I plan to use Bud, Not Buddy to do a novel study with my students that teaches them about both.

As a novel study, we will explore the characters, make connections to the world, ourselves, and other texts, and identify and investigate the themes.

We will practice our reading comprehension strategies, strengthen our summarizing skills, and improve our creative writing.

In addition, we will learn about the events that took place during the Great Depression when this story takes place and the effects it had on children, as well as how it shaped history in our city. The story is rich with the musical influences of the time, and we will learn about the different music styles and make connections to the music the students are learning about in their music class.
