Exploring Evolution with Science Kits!

Help me give my students kits to explore natural selection and fossils in order to make our Evolution Unit come alive!

My Students

My students are wonderful. But I guess all teachers say that right? I have the pleasure of teaching 87 7th graders at an inner city KIPP charter school in GA. My student population is 99% African American and 77% free or reduced price lunch. They are thinkers, explorers, investigators, and above all, scientists! They range in age between 11 and 13, but of course they want to know everything about the world. They attend a school that is preparing them to go to and through college by spending a whopping 10 hours at school daily, plus 2 hours of homework nightly.

They are dynamic, challenging, bright, and humorous young people whose hard work has made our school the number one school in our district and a Georgia School of Excellence.

My students are not only wonderful, they are the next generation of scientists, doctors, and engineers and they deserve everything I can provide for their excellent life science education.

My Project

It is often said that if students DO with their hands then they will remember forever! Help make learning come alive by bringing abstract concepts to life!

Students will simulate the Peppered Moths of Manchester example of evolution by means of natural selection using the first kit where they will actually become birds and hunt peppered moths on simulated tree bark.

Students will end their unit by exploring fossils as another type of evidence that supports evolution.

With these two hands-on kits, students will be able to explore evolutionary biology concepts across two labs that will not only enhance their learning but also help them draw conclusions that biologists have drawn given the same evidence.
