My Students
My students are a large group of curious readers from Brooklyn, NY. These 8th-grade students love to debate and make connections between what they read and what they learn in other subjects. In addition, they are also always making connections to the real world. Many of my students do not have the resources or the support at home to purchase their own copies of books, so I am constantly searching for ways to put books in their hands -- even if it means buying them the books myself.
My Project
This book, Death Be Not Proud will help my young readers recognize that heroes exist in real life. Furthermore, they will be challenged by the content and the vocabulary in this marvelous book. It is my hope that this will be the first time they read the story of Johnny Gunther, at that they will revisit this piece as an adult in order to gain an additional perspective on how parents deal with great loss. John Gunther was one of the great American writers, and I look forward to guiding my students through this great work of American nonfiction. I believe that they will remember this book, Death Be Not Proud and Johnny for a lifetime.
