Exploring Ecosystems!

My students need a hands-on understanding of ecosystems. They will create an eco-column using soda bottles. The top half of the column will be a terrarium and the bottom half will be an aquatic system.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I currently teach 5th grade in a large urban school district. This year I have 35 students in my class who love science! The majority of my students love to come to school each day to learn and are enthusiastic and hard-working, and many of my 5th graders find school as their safe haven. As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they still come to school excited to learn. I look forward to providing my students with creative and meaningful hands-on learning experiences.

My Project

My students love science and look forward to conducting science experiments. I have found that students learn best through hands-on activities where they are fully engaged and become active learners. The materials requested will make a difference in students' learning by providing them with the opportunity to create and simulate a real-life ecosystem. In the aquarium portion, students will be able to observe how mosquito fish and snails depend on the duckweed and elodea. In the terrarium portion, students will be able to plant mustard and rye seeds and record and graph their observations. Later, once there is enough growth from the plants, students will be able to add the crickets and pillbugs to their terrariums. Once the column is finally created, students will be able to draw conclusions and observe the interdependence between an aquarium and terrarium.

By creating an eco-column with living plants and animals, my students will be given the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of ecosystems.

They will have the opportunity to make observations, graph data, draw conclusions, etc. to gain a better understanding of the world around them.
