This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My inner city Hispanic students are well aware of Cesar Chavez Jr. and other leaders of the Chicano movement. My challenge is to broaden their knowledge of the civil rights era and expose them to the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other prominent figures of this time.
My students are amazing fifth graders, who deserve the very best!
They are fun, energetic and creative, and I love to showcase their spectacular talents. The school where I teach is considered "high poverty," so students do not have the same opportunities as those in other neighborhoods. Everyone qualifies for free lunch in the Title 1 program.
My Project
I want my students to broaden their knowledge of diversity and acceptance by giving them the opportunity to research a variety of prominent figures of the civil rights era. Through an on-going project-based learning experience, my students will research, explore and create presentations on a variety of prominent figures from different facets of civil rights and diversity. With a pair of iPad Minis, my students will have the literature needed to research and explore prominent figures at their fingertips. In addition, this valuable learning tool also gives them access to videos, pictures, and historical documents of the person they will research. This hard work will culminate with oral and written presentations summarizing the wealth of knowledge they have obtained.
This project connects students with the history of our country.
It is an important lesson and a topic that needs to be deeply understood by students. This lesson ties in many things students need to learn. Opportunities for projects like this are very important for my students. Our school is high poverty and these lessons create lifelong learners. Chase, please help. All donations are deeply appreciated.
