Exploring Cultures Through Fairy Tales

My Students

Our students are striving to be better every day since returning to in-person learning! They are resilient and determined to academically recover from the pandemic. Each and every day they arrive ready to learn and grow.

Our school is in the middle of the city and our students encounter struggles outside of our walls every day.

Yet, they show up each and every day ready to learn. They are an inspiration to our staff to be creative in designing instruction in creative and engaging ways.

My Project

With all that is going on in the world today students are stuck within four walls, whether in a classroom or on the screen. Field trips are tough to plan safely. We can watch videos of places, but nothing takes the place of a good story to allow a glimpse into a different culture.

Sharing different cultural perspectives of a well known fairy tale, Cinderella, can give us a peek into another community.

Students will be able to explore over 25 countries and make inferences about those countries by reading this famous tale from their perspectives. Through this exploration we will gain insight on what is important in other cultures and what they value. Each book tells the same tale but focuses on different aspects and values that will allow our students to see the same story through a different lens.

By using a well known tale, students will compare and contrast culturally distinct variations of the fairy tale, Cinderella, from around the world. Students will explore storytelling traditions and make comparisons between cultural versions of Cinderella. They will see the same story from a variety of perspectives. They will also see how these tales affect people throughout the world and not just in the United States. They will learn the value of folk tales and fairy tales - not just from Disney. Students will also research the cultures represented in the fairy tales and create a visual art piece using clipboards and anchor charts to reach their audiences.
