Hello, friends of my classroom! It's novel study time once again, and this year I have selected The Surrender Tree by Margarita Engle. This book explores the Cuban movement for independence through the eyes of Rosa la Bayamesa, a famed wartime healer who gave medical care to Cuban rebels fighting for their freedom. It's written entirely in poetic form, which is helpful for my students who struggle with the abstract concepts of verse.
While many students can afford their copies, I always account for the students who can't.
I provide copies for every student who cannot get their own, to keep, not to borrow. It's so important for my students to read and analyze real paper books, and including everyone in that mission is a top priority!
