Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach sixth, seventh, and eighth grade Academically Intellectually Gifted Language Arts and Reading classes in Duplin County, North Carolina. Our students come from a rural low income community. Our school population is around 580 students of mixed socioeconomic backgrounds: the majority is African American at 65%, Caucasian at 25%, and Latino at 10%.
Each year we do a unit entitled ?Christmas around the World?. My sixth graders will study Roald Dahl featuring the drama version of ?Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?. Students will improve their skills by completing activities related to reading in a content area, cooperative learning and multiple intelligences. They will do literature circles through means of technology on this drama. This unit will be integrated with social studies, math, and technology. After analyzing this selection as a class, they will then be asked to analyze it as a small team; students will be asked to produce a product of their choice displaying their learning.
This experience prepares them for the next grade level as well as helps them prepare for upcoming standardized tests. These are not typical studies for students of middle school age so I know they will be challenged by this unit.
