Exploring Careers In Science

My students need 14 books on Science careers so they can research and learn about future career opportunities available to them.

My Students

Help encourage the next generation of great scientists! In the United States, fewer and fewer students are entering careers in the field of science. Books on science careers will help students learn pathways to science-related jobs that they can pursue throughout school and beyond. We need more scientists!

I teach students in a middle-class, suburban setting with all ethnic backgrounds.

My students have a variety of academic learning levels and needs. The district that I work in has over 15,000 students, and we have a strong tradition of fostering academic excellence and success. We have continually scored top in the state evaluations, and we wish to continue this strong tradition.

My Project

Research shows that students enjoy their science classroom experiences but do not see themselves as scientists. Also, there is a trend in the US showing a decrease in the number of students pursuing science coursework and, consequently, careers in science. Students do not really know what opportunities are available to them in science which may encourage them down a different path. Exposing students to science careers will inform them as to what a real scientist does and increase their interest in entering a career in science. Due to time constraints and scheduling issues, the computer lab is difficult to use for research like this. The books I am requesting will help me spotlight specific science careers, and students will be able to research the pathways to those careers in my classroom. Each book highlights different careers in different fields. For each unit I teach, we will do a mini-project and focus on careers related to that unit.

The books that I am requesting will help me to expose my science students to careers in the field of science in the hopes that they pursue a science-related career in the future.

The mini-research projects that I will do throughout the year will introduce new opportunities to my students. I want to give my students a glimpse of what is possible for them.
