Exploring Body Systems: A Dissection Project for Dual-Credit Biology Students
Help me give my students the opportunity to observe body systems in a real context. This will prepare them for higher-level science classes and, for many of them, a career in a STEM field.
My students are 11th and 12th graders who unfortunately did not have the chance of participating in the frog dissection that usually takes place in middle school due to COVID-19. They deserve the opportunity to dissect an animal because it is an important part of the biology curriculum and will prepare them for science classes in college. These students have chosen to participate in my course, dual-credit biology, because they have an interest in STEM fields and wanted to earn both high school and college biology credits.
We recently started a unit on the body systems, examining how specific organs help the human body maintain homeostasis.
This content is vital for empowering young adults to make informed decisions about their health like nutrition and fitness. Additionally, an awareness about the body helps young adults to prevent illnesses and diseases and they grow older and navigate through life.
Dissecting the fetal pigs will allow my exceptional students to examine the anatomy of a mammal that is structurally similar to humans in order to enhance their understanding during this unit, their final one of the school year which means graduation for many of them. This activity will allow students to see the organs in 3D which is more impactful than looking at a scientific textbook or video. My students will practice lab skills, gain confidence in scientific knowledge and activities and solidify their understanding of the body systems which is an excellent foundation for higher-level science classes like anatomy and physiology.
