Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
While being a school social worker, I hear every day about challenges with body image, self-esteem, bullying, body shaming and eating disorder behaviors. Girls often avoid eating at school and wear clothes that make them "blend in."
Starfish discusses all of the complicated topics that come with growing up, going to school and living in a weight-obsessed world.
I will hold a book club/processing group to encourage students to take up all the space they need. Our school is made up of a diverse population. With this comes bodies in all shapes and sizes, often not fitting into the status quo. Tiktok and other platforms continue to promote only one way to look, but as the students will learn in this group, there are many ways to be/look. The students will get to keep the books and hopefully share them with their friends.
