Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

From the top floor of our school you can see the Chicago skyline, but many students have not been downtown. When we have, they marvel at the skyscrapers and monstrous structures. It's in that moment of wonder that I see future architects and engineers in the Lozano 3rd graders.

Our students show Lozano pride in everything they do.

They love to dance and run, read new books, explore new math concepts, build structures, play chess and help out their community. Our Elementary school is a public school in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood. In the past decade, the neighborhood property values have been rising, forcing many of the school's families to move away. Yet I know many parents, some of whom attended Lozano themselves, who drive or take the bus with their children every morning so their children can attend Lozano. Our students population is 85% Hispanic and 18% black and almost all of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Parents involvement and family ties are important at our school. Most of my 3rd graders have a sibling at the school that they look up to or one that they are mentoring. About 90% of my 3rd graders are involved in after school activities like sports, chess, art and math groups.

My Project

Most of the resources we are requesting will not stay in the classroom but will be allow us to get out and explore. We are hoping to take an architectural tour called, "The Secret of Skyscrapers," put on by the Chicago Architectural Foundation. In the tour students will learn about the different structural elements of urban buildings and go on an exploration of Chicago's skyscrapers to find these elements at use. Meanwhile, we will pair the trip with a math and social studies unit studying Engineering and Chicago history. In math class we will dive deep into measurement, including area and perimeter, in order to construct our own models of Chicago buildings. Students will be encouraged to incorporate the structural elements into their own designs, as well as use geometric patterns to mimic Chicago buildings. In social studies we will look at Chicago's architectural history from the Great Chicago Fire to today's trends of re-purposing old factories and warehouses.

This trip will expose the students not only to some of the most amazing architecture in the world, but to the careers of those behind the building's- the architects and engineers- that created them.

Third grade is a year where subjects such as math and science become more rigorous and I think the more hands-on and exploratory opportunities students have with the subject matter, the more likely they will embrace these challenges and be hooked on these subjects for life.
