Explore the Chemistry of Bookmaking

My students need 1 group papermaking kit, 20 sheets of pulp to make the paper and 3 quarts of adhesive.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. B.'s classroom raised $453

This project is fully funded

The high school students in this suburban school's chemistry courses need to be involved in hands-on activities to fully understand the related science.

Books are still ubiquitous. The art and science of bookmaking is fascinating to students if they can do all the steps from making the paper and ink to binding the book. Budget constraints of the last few years make implementation of this project impossible.

Students tend to view chemistry class as unrelated to their lives and a major disappointment after they discover we do not blow up very many things. So, to counteract these attitudes, this project would consist of making paper and making ink while researching the history and chemistry of these products. Then the students will create short chemistry books that they will bind and share with elementary school students. The missing resources for this project include the paper making forms, the basic pulp and the adhesive for the book binding. This project would make the involved chemistry "real" to the students, provide opportunities for creativity in a science class and allow the students to indirectly mentor younger students.

Only with your support will it be possible to bring this experience that combines chemistry with history and literacy to my students. Think back to most traditional chemistry classes where you followed a "recipe" to make something that you cared little or nothing about and consider how you would have felt actually producing a useful, creative product.
