Help me give my students hands on manipulatives: Snap Cubes help students explore volume and surface area of prisms and Fraction Pattern Blocks help to make sense of arithmetic with rational numbers.

My Project
One of my favorite quotes by mathematical social influencer, Dan Meyer, is "I teach high school math. I sell a product to a market that doesn't want it, but is forced by law to buy it." As a middle school math teacher, I feel this deeply! One of the greatest tools I have to sell my product (mathematics) to my market that doesn't want it (middle school students) is with mathematical manipulatives. I love using mathematical manipulatives in my classroom because it gives students the opportunity to play with and visualize mathematics using concrete tools.
When students explore important mathematical concepts with manipulatives, they find patterns and discover important relationships.
Math manipulatives create opportunities to engage students in the learning process, turning students into mathematicians. Rather than teach students boring formulas to memorize on how to find surface area and volume of prisms, I will give them connecting cubes and allow them to construct prisms of their own design, allowing them to create and play. Naturally, this play leads to students counting every cube and quickly evolves to multiplying to find areas and then volume. Students, when given the right materials to play, will discover important formulas on their own which they are more likely to remember because they discovered it rather than the teacher telling them to memorize a boring (and forgettable) formula.
Fractions are always a struggle for students of any age, and pattern blocks allow students to visualize fractions including common denominators so they can make sense of adding and subtracting them abstractly. Whiteboards are a great way to make any lesson engaging and help students feel excited to learn.
