Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
While they come from a variety of backgrounds, many of my students are first generation English language learners. Many will also be the first in their family to go to college.
Students at our school are hopeful and determined, in spite of often daunting challenges that are in their way.
Some come from the most dire of socioeconomic situations, but still come to school ever day ready to learn. One of the biggest goals we have here in the middle school is to broaden the horizons of our students. The greater their awareness of the world outside of their immediate life, their desire to succeed in school grows.
My Project
Our students will be able to gain a new insight and appreciation for science and art through a visit to the Exploratorium. The Exploratorium provides a wide variety of engaging activities and exhibits that our students can experience there.
The Exploratorium has a rotating set of activities that will provide a concrete value to what our students are learning in class.
As an example, they have an activity that shows the connections between different languages around the world. As many of our students are second-language learners, this highly valuable, as it shows them that the language skills they already have can serve them in becoming fluent in English.
