This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Kids should be allowed to break stuff more often. That's a consequence of exploration. Exploration is what you do when you don't know what you're doing." - Neil deGrasse Tyson
Our school is literacy heavy.
We spend much of our day working on reading comprehension, phonics skills, grammar, and writing. Because of this, we've been able to close the academic gap in our community. Last year, 70% of my class was on grade level in reading and 54% was above grade level. This year, we are also able to implement an exploration block at the end of our day. During this block, students will be able to learn through building, creating, and imagining. These amazing students will not only be able to attend college and graduate because of their achievement academically, but will also have the opportunity to express their artistic, scientific, or engineering sides by providing a time to be creative in first grade.
My Project
At the end of the day the students will divide into small groups to participate in different activities. These are called centers. There will be 4-6 centers happening at the same time. Some groups will be building dinosaurs out of wooden puzzles, some will be painting, some will be weaving, or some will be creating buildings and bridges. The students will rotate through the centers daily and be exposed to different activities.
"Kids are born curious about the natural world.
They are always turning over rocks, jumping with two feet into mud puddles, and playing with the tablecloth and fine china." - Neil deGrasse Tyson
Many of my curious students spend their days watching television and playing video games and do not have opportunities to explore their curiosity. I want to provide a place where they will be able to understand their abilities and test their intelligence.
