My students need sand and moon sand for the exploration table, 2 microscopes, 2 magnifying tables, 2 carrot seed kits for growing carrots, 2 planting kits and letter molds for exploring their environment!
I teach fabulous at risk pre-kindergarten children in a low income community. We are a high needs community and we have several special needs friends in the classroom. We are a targeted Title 1 school so our government funding is very limited.
Ever try to explore the inner workings of concrete? Didn't get very far did ya? Ever try and grow plants in hard infertile soil...and again, got nowhere? My students do not have the same opportunities as many who live in rural areas with lush greens and bugs and all the other great sundries that country living affords...yet, they LOVE science!
With the addition of the magnifying tables and growing kits, my students would be able to predict, actually carry out and plant, then explore their predictions in the scientific realm! They would have access to magnification and the scientific method right at their fingertips! The sand and moon sand would be an excellent addition to our water table, and with the sand letters we would not only be able to dig and create but we would be reinforcing our letter knowledge at the same time!
Giving these students a little science in their classroom can and will go a LONG way. We talk about plants and animal life, we discuss digging, archeology and life science but don't have the opportunity to explore hands on-due to the limited resources here. Please help us see the world through the looking glass!
