My students need laptop tables to write on as they collaboratively work around our intentionally desk-less classroom.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The scholars I teach at our Title I school are very diverse. Our school has the privilege of serving scholars from 20 different countries that speak 24 different languages. They range from homeless children, to refugee children who have no formal schooling and beyond.
Scholars in my classroom collaborate with each other, exploring new and exciting projects in both math and science.
In order to give these scholars space to explore and ignite their creativity, we have decided to eliminate extra desks in our room and replace them with comfy floor seating. Something I have noticed is that when given the choice of working around the room or staying at a desk, almost 100% of my scholars chose to work on the floor with a comfy pillow/stuffed animal and a clip board. This caused me to think about where I was most comfortable working. Most of the time, I am on a couch, on the floor against a wall, or laying down--always comfortable. Then it occurred to me that my students want that same creative choice! These 2nd graders come to me to learn math and science. Almost every project we complete is in a group, around the floor, using math manipulatives or science tools. We are always active and moving around. With such busy bodies, desks only get in the way.
My Project
In our classroom there are a few options for the use of a tabletop for scholars who prefer it, but the majority of my scholars choose to be on the ground, up against a wall, or laying down working. The laptop tables are so essential for our classroom because scholars need a flat surface for writing and for testing purposes. Our desk-less classroom was created in effort to enrich the freedom of student choice and to allow students to be in control of their learning and work space. Having laptop tables allows scholars to work around the room creatively and freely without feeling always restricted to a desk with paper.
This project will make a difference in our classroom because not only does it give scholars the opportunity to creatively think and work around the room, but it supports our research-based decision to have an engaging, explorative, desk-less classroom full of opportunity and desire to learn, collaborate, and grow.
We are the first and only classroom in my school who have a desk-less classroom. Let the adventures begin!
