Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Think of a time when you were little, when you took a trip. Maybe you went to the zoo, the beach, the lake, or the mountains. Maybe you were blessed enough to travel within our country, or even beyond. Now imagine NOT having those experiences. Now you are in the shoes of many of my children

The children in my class are in first grade.

They are bright-eyed and eager to learn. Many of them come from very low-income families that are stretched thin, struggling to keep up in these rough economic times. Many of my kids are no strangers to having a family member in jail, sharing their room with multiple kids, or their house with multiple families. They may have to take a city bus to school, or even walk when the car breaks down. However, every day, my kids come to me with an eagerness to learn all that they can while they are there! Each day I find myself full of hope that they are learning as much from me, as I am from them. My kids deserve the best. Their caring, thoughtful and loving enthusiasm keeps me going each day.

My Project

Although my children have a clear understanding of their immediate surroundings, they are missing the experiences that you get when you travel. I have many kids that have never been to the beach. They haven't been to the zoo. Many have never left our city. Some don't have cars to even travel around our city. The non-fiction books that I have ordered in this project will give my children the opportunity to read, and travel the world through text. They will get to see and become familiar with different parts of the world! I knew this project was necessary when my class was talking about what they wanted to be when they got older. I had several children say they wanted to work at a local fast food chain. Although there is nothing wrong with this; I want them to set their sights on college, travel the world, reach a higher education. I want this to be a part of their dreams. They are ALL capable of this if they set their sights on it.

My project is infinitely important for the lives of my children this year, and for years to come.

It will show them that there is a different and exciting world outside their everyday surroundings! Reading inspires minds and peak's curiosity. My goal with this project is to build a love for reading and a hunger to explore the world!
