This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Inquisitive, curious and creative describes my class exceptionally well. They work very hard in the classroom with all their subjects, but they excel in Science in particular. They absolutely love the exploration aspect of Science and they adore experimenting and investigating. However, our ability to create new and engaging situations to explore is severely limited by our resources. I teach in a low-income, high risk school and being able to provide extra opportunities outside of the prescribed curriculum is difficult.

Our current science unit is Physical and Chemical Properties and my students are learning how to identify "mystery powders" (talc, baking soda, salt, etc.) via their interactions with different liquids (water, vinegar, iodine). Obviously, baking soda and vinegar brings to mind exploding volcanoes, and I want to give my students this opportunity to explore reactions and design their own volcano.

I want to get kits to allow my students to design and create their own volcano. This will allow them to combine their learning from the last unit (ecosystems) and this unit (chemical reactions). Being able to create (and then EXPLODE!) their own volcano will help my students remember their learnings from this unit and the ways to make reactions. Additionally, I want to get a teacher model that I can use annually for this unit!

Your generous donation will allow my kids to continue to explore and investigate outside of what the curriculum provides. Providing my students with the resources they need to create a "real world application" of their science learning will allow them to learn more about Chemical Properties.
