This project aims to give students a comprehensive understanding of mammalian anatomy while connecting this knowledge to real-world applications. Through the dissection of rats and pigs, students can compare anatomical structures and recognize the similarities between these animals and humans. This understanding is essential for students pursuing biology, medicine, or biomedical engineering careers. Additionally, this lab will foster critical thinking and scientific inquiry, as students will analyze, hypothesize, and draw conclusions from their observations, further developing their investigative skills.
The preserved rats and pigs I’m requesting for our hands-on dissection lab will provide my students with an experiential learning opportunity that brings biological concepts to life.
These specimens allow students to explore anatomy and physiology tangibly, moving beyond textbook diagrams to interact with natural organisms directly.
By physically dissecting these animals, students can observe and compare organ systems like the digestive, circulatory, and respiratory systems, making the content more engaging and accessible. The hands-on experience will enhance their understanding of how body systems function and interrelate, deepening their learning through active exploration rather than passive observation.
What makes my students unique is their diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Many come from underrepresented groups in STEM and are passionate about using science to address global challenges. They are curious, eager to learn, and highly motivated to positively impact the world, primarily through fields like medicine, environmental science, and technology. By providing this hands-on experience, I aim to inspire them to see themselves as future scientists and innovators, empowering them to pursue STEM careers and become leaders in solving real-world problems.
