Experiential Learning in Space Science

My Students

The diversity of my students is high, both racially and as related to their level of achievement and the way they learn. This year my schedule changed so many times that through my brick-and-mortar and virtual classes, I have seen most of the 8th-grade cohort and a lot of the 7th graders who were in accelerated courses last year. Most of my students this year are on the lower end of the achievement levels, and as they return from virtual instruction to brick and mortar, they are trying to catch up, and I try to make up for the lost time and reduce the challenges. I want to provide them with a safe and happy place upon their return and help them catch up and perform as well as possible at their exams.

My Project

Teaching space science is one of the hardest topics due to its abstract nature. Abstract topics are the hardest for students as well because even though everyone can see the night sky, it is hard for students to experience it. With this project, I am trying to introduce immersive visuals and models to middle school space science.

Introduction of experiential learning into middle school space science.

With this projection system, I intend to convert the classroom's ceiling into a planetarium so students can easily connect to space and understand the distances and shapes and colors of planets, the eclipses, the hierarchy in space, etc.

This is one of the best projection systems for teaching space science. A model for teaching about eclipses and tides is also included in this project.
