Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
What do you remember about your history classes? Were they engaging, filled with exploration, questioning, and observations? Or, were they simply centered around a bunch of facts you had to learn? My goal is to help my students examine the U.S. in a way that is engaging, exciting, and lasting.
My 8th graders are curious and hopeful students; however, they come to school with many challenges already standing in their way.
It is my goal to provide my students with the very best education possible. That is what every child deserves. However, poverty is a real challenge for many of my students, and they are affected by it every day. About 96.8% are eligible to receive free school lunches, and they are often lacking the resources needed to become successful students.
As a teacher who is about to start my second year, I am still building my classroom to be full of rich resources and documents to help my instruction. Teachers are given very few resources to help create the classroom that students need to be successful. I would be letting them down by not providing them with the kind of education they deserve.
These resources will allow me to implement many of the activities and experiences I envision for my 8th graders. Please help me provide the very best for my students!
My Project
My students need subscriptions to Scholastic Scope magazine, various books, basic supplies like markers, and a document camera to help examine primary sources. The largest request is a document camera. All of these resources, together, help to create my vision of a classroom that makes history come alive!
I like to start the year off with my students with this quote by James Baldwin, which speaks to what can happen when students learn history hands-on:
"I would teach him [or her!] that the press he reads is not as free as it says it is---and that he can do something about that, too. I would try to make him know that just as American history is longer, larger, more various, more beautiful, and more terrible than anything anyone has ever said about it, so is the world larger, more daring, more beautiful, and more terrible, but principally larger---and that it belongs to him."
This quote speaks to the importance of exposure to primary sources in a way that allows students to question and take control of their own learning in the classroom.
This project will help me welcome my students at the beginning of the year with essential resources to help them learn through discovery.
My goal is to help my students understand our country as well as their place in it. The document camera (and the activities that I am so excited to implement) are so important for the classroom culture that I hope to build, one of exploration, engagement, and agency.
Thank you for your consideration and support!
