My Project
Our school is starting an engineering program with a goal of helping students see how engineering pulls of various sources of knowledge to make sense of the world around us. This cross-curricular nature of engineering makes it a great tool for tackling a variety of problems. Students are all too often ignorant to flight and see it as a tool that is not engaged with so their ability to engineer solutions related to flight is limited based on their own ignorance.
Through allowing students an opportunity to experience flying, students can recognize that there is a whole range of experiences that they can make sense of, given the opportunity.
Flight is all too often not intuitive to student due to lack of exposure. The goal of this program is to provide students with an opportunity to engage with flight so they can then build of what they learn to expand their problem solving to new heights!
Most of this application focuses on the tools that will be used to help students gain hands on experience with flight. The larger goal of this program is to help students recognize that they can contribute to the body of knowledge of their peers and can learn about why planes work as they do to fly by design. The batteries, airplanes, and controllers will all be used to create initial experiences that will engage students interest. The flight simulator software will help students learn how to fly, along with the trainer planes having safety functionality to help students avoid major crashes. The rest of the program extends on to students learning about the logistics of creating flyable planes. This will start with the foam gliders and electronics needed to make our own planes and study their effectiveness.
