My students need biographies of musical composers, like Duke Ellington, Bach and Mozart, for exposure to biographical nonfiction reading in a musical setting.

My Students
How can you really know about music if you don't know about the people who write the music? My students are learning all about music and compositions, but they haven't been able to make the connection between themselves and the people who write the songs.
My students are elementary school students who are learning to love music and love reading.
They are full of energy and talent waiting to blossom. They are all students in a Title One school where 96% receive free and reduced cost lunches. Some of my students are transient military dependents. Others are products of homes that fall into the poverty category. It doesn't matter what struggle my students meet, they are at school each day ready to learn.
My Project
Because of our Title One status, our school has an emphasis on reading and math. While we are working hard as a whole to increase the amount of non-fiction literature in our classroom libraries, we are still lacking those resources. I am requesting fourteen books from the Getting to Know the World's Greatest Composer series. These biographical books of musical greats such as Mozart, Gershwin, Stravinsky, Sousa and even the Beatles will be a stepping stone to my students understanding more about music and will also give them the experience of reading from the biographical genre. These books would be used weekly by myself to read aloud to students and create connections between our listening activities and the music we are learning. These books would also serve a purpose in my classroom for student-guided reading activities during small group instruction.
Quality reading material in the classroom is a must.
Having stories that can pull students in and open a new world to them is priceless. My students need a new world opened to them to inspire them to possibly become the next great composer. Having the Getting to Know the World's Greatest Composer series is one tool I would be able to use to unlock those doors.
