Experiencing Community for Students With Special Needs

My Project

As the school year has begun and my students are developing into teenagers, they've begun to explore the idea of what a community is, how it functions and why we must be kind to others. However, these concepts often become confusing for students whose disability makes it tough for them to interact verbally.

By bringing items into the classroom that allow students to experience community in a tactile way, we give students the opportunity to practice interactions without having to read, write or watch a video.

Little People are the perfect resource for this practice as they model how community members dress and the way they function in their community environments. This preps students for not only interacting with others in an organic way, but builds skills needed for students to acquire jobs and meet their basic living needs.
