My Students

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness."- Mark Twain. At our school, we believe that giving our students big experiences allows them to dream big and opens their eyes to new possibilities for their futures. Because of this, we plan a yearly class trip for our fifth graders.

My students are big-hearted fifth graders who love to learn.

Though my students come from a variety of backgrounds and situations, they strive to overcome every challenge that comes their way. Our school is racially, culturally, and economically diverse, and we are proud of the culture of success we have created that celebrates our differences and the unique qualities of each individual.

My Project

In June, our fifth graders will meet at 5:00am to board buses bound for Atlanta! We will visit a huge amount of places in two days - CNN, The Georgia Aquarium, The World of Coca Cola, the Stone Mountain Laser Show, The Martin Luther King Historic Site, The Ebenezer Baptist Church (of which Dr. King was a member), and the Battle of Atlanta Cyclorama in which the students will see the Civil War brought to life. All of these places touch on aspects of our curriculum in a variety of ways - we'll see how the products we use are made, how the news we watch on TV is produced, how the hero we hold dear lived, and how the men who battled to see what America would value fought. I believe taking my students out into the community, seeing a new city, eating in new places, learning how to behave and interact with new people are all important. I know the best way to learn a variety of curriculum standards and life skills is to get out there and do, live, and experience them on a field trip!

Our fifth graders have been engaged in ongoing fundraising activities since the start of the school year, including selling popcorn, donuts, lollipops, and pencils.

We will soon begin a letter-writing campaign to solicit community and corporate sponsors. Still, the need is great, and I am using every possible means to ensure no child misses out on this trip! Your support will give my students unforgettable experiences that open their eyes, hearts, and minds, changing them positively forever.
