My Students
Ancient Egypt is an amazing place, and my students already love it! I want to build on their experience by reading this novel, which is on their reading level, exciting and historically accurate. Both boys and girls in my class will love this story about a slave girl who becomes a double-agent spy!
My students are 6th graders, entering middle school for the first time.
Our area was devastated by Katrina, when my students were 6. Our area is bouncing back, as are the students, who love to learn. Egypt is always the most popular unit of study and a class set would make the unit even better. I know that the school has no money in the budget for the class set, and many of my students are low-income and could not buy their own copies. This would help us greatly!
My Project
I loved this book when I was in middle school. Mara, Daughter of the Nile, by Eloise Jarvis McGraw is an amazing book. Not only is it on their reading level, it is meant for young readers. It brings Egypt to life in the pages of this story.
My students are naturally draw to Egypt because it is interesting and exotic. This book brings it to life in a way that the text and videos simply cannot. All of my students will feel engaged, both boys and girls. The story is about a slave girl who becomes a double-agent spy in the court of Seti I. The story is gripping, and there is a hint of a love story- on an age-appropriate level.
As a teacher, I love it because it is very historically accurate. The details in the story are vivid and show what daily life in Egypt, among various social classes, was like. I think this story would dramatically increase their learning during our Egypt unit.
By donating, you are helping to build a love of history in the students.
You are creating an experience that they will otherwise not have. By reading historical fiction, the students will have Egypt come to life in their imaginations and remember it in greater detail. I hope that this will make Social Studies a more meaningful experience for my students and make them love learning and love history. Thank you for considering my project!
