Expanding Vocabulary

My students need pocket charts, flip charts, match up games, and Creating Sight-Word Sentences Center to help them build their vocabulary. These games and activities will allow my students to build their vocabulary in a fun manner.

My Students

"What does this word mean?", "How do you say...?", "What is that?" are typical questions I hear throughout the day. Learning English can be a very daunting task. I want to help my students improve their vocabulary by exposing them to a variety of words in a fun and engaging environment.

My students come from all around the world.

They are working on their English Language skills everyday. Many of them are economically disadvantaged and communicate in a language other than English at home. Typically,an average student enters elementary school knowing over 5,000 words, while many of my students are well under this number, so please help my students catch up.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of vocabulary development resources at differing levels, as I work with students in grades K-6. Some students enter my school without any English language skills. For these students the Vocabulary Development Photo Card Libraries will aid in exposing them to new words. The photos are translated into a number of languages, allowing me to integrate a students native language while they are still becoming acclimated to the English language and American culture. The Creating Sight-Word Sentences Center is a hands on way for primary students (grades K-2) to practice learning sight words. The picture support of vocabulary words used in the sentences will aid older students as well. For students in the upper grades (grades 3-6) vocabulary development is integrated into their overall Language Arts curricula. The Vocabulary Match-Ups and Vocabulary Practice Quiz Cards are a fun way for students to practice learning their English language skills.

Knowledge of vocabulary is essential in becoming a proficient reader because it is a large part of reading comprehension.

Students have to know the meaning of a majority of words in a story to understand what it is about. Please help me, help my students to share their ideas, understand the information they read, and be successful for years to come.
